EKG Technician, Certificate

This program trains individuals to perform electrocardiogram (EKG) diagnostic tests under clinical supervision. Instruction will include anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, medical terminology, the EKG testing environment and equipment operation, and demonstration of accurate EKG testing (CIP code 51.0902). Upon successful completion, students are eligible for the national Certified EKG Technician (CET) certification.

Upon successful completion of this program, the student will have the skills to obtain an entry-level position as an EKG tech and sit for a national EKG Technician examination, such as the Certified EKG Technician (CET) exam administered by American Allied Health (AAH).

Program Path Sequence

The listing that follows is a recommended sequence of courses designed for students to complete in one semester. The student should consult with an advisor for information specific to their academic situation. Upon completion, the student will be awarded a 7-credit hour Certificate of EKG issued by the college.

General Education (GE) Courses

The EKG Tech program is designed as a terminal certificate program.  Certificate students are not required to take specific elective courses for this program. If students choose to continue their education, this certificate supports the development of skills applicable to phlebotomy, medical assisting, nursing, patient care and emergency medical technician careers.

Students should work closely with their advisors to determine the most efficient method of obtaining career goals.

Program Core Courses

All courses listed on the recommended sequence of courses (or equivalent courses transferred from other institutions) are required for the completion of the program and either a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or a grade of C or better in all courses within the certificate.

Program Outcomes

1. Adhere to safety protocols as well as quality and infection control practices in testing environments.

2. Identify the primary components of electrocardiogram (EKG) systems and tracings.

3. Employ fundamental workplace skills.

4. Identify fundamental aspects of anatomy and physiology.

   5. Perform various point‑of‑care testing (POCT) procedures including EKGs and accurately acquire, interpret, and evaluate patient EKG tracings.

6. Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams and instruct patients to prepare for cardiac testing.

7. Adhere to HIPAA regulations and ethical standards in testing environments.

8. Evaluate time management and organizational strategies.
