Music, AA


The Associate of Arts with an emphasis in Music is designed to prepare students for a transfer to a four-year institution. The courses required are a basic foundation on which one can build.

Prerequisites

The student will need to demonstrate proficiencies in reading, English, and mathematics based on the college assessment test, ACT or SAT scores, or by taking the recommended/ required classes. Some of the courses in this curriculum have specific prerequisites.

Program Outcomes

Students will develop an understanding of the following:

  1. Describe the basic elements of music, including sound, pitch, dynamics, and tone color.
  2. Explain how melody, harmony, rhythm, and meter are used to determine forms and textures of music in various styles.
  3. Differentiate between various musical forms and textures.
  4. Describe how societal mores determine historical styles.
  5. Explain the multiple functions of music for individuals and societies.
  6. Create original music using the notation system of Western music.
  7. Prepare ensemble music for performance with various small ensembles.
  8. Prepare solo music for public performances.
